In expanding the Awareness training to four modules, we want to help people to get a more comprehensive understanding of the issues than any one short course can supply.

Dementia Awareness training modules
We are now offering an expanded range of Awareness sessions for people working or caring for older people or others at particular risk of dementia.
Whilst each module can stand alone, and can be booked separately, we will certificate people who have completed the full Dementia Awareness course, eg all four modules.
Each session will last for 2-3 hrs and the primary topics are:
Module One – Dementia overview
What is dementia?
Early signs & symptoms; the sub-types of dementia; Learning Disability and dementia,
use of the 6-CIT to identify more people who may have dementia
Module Two - Behaviours that challenge
Behaviours that challenge (behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia) and communicating unmet needs
Communicating with people with dementia, assessing the likely cause of behaviours,
Module Three – Dementia, Delirium and Depression
Don’t presume dementia
Differences between depression, delirium and dementia; Paraphrenia; mood disorders; anxiety disorders; mental capacity.

Module Four – Healthy lifestyles, tools and activities
Nutrition, hydration & healthy lifestyles:
Exercise & activity; looking after your mind; diet; wellbeing;
use of tools and understanding how people’s recognition of food / cutlery etc might change; smoking cessation & reducing alcohol intake etc

Courses are being delivered through a partnership of staff from the Dudley & Walsall Mental Health Trust, Walsall Health Care and Walsall Council.
Please note that each module stands alone, however we recommend that people attend module 1 before any of the other three (which can be taken in any order).
