AMHP

The AMHP role was established by the Mental Health Act 2007.  Accountability for the provision of AMHP’s) remains with local authorities under section 114 of the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended by the Mental Health Act 2007).

Since the MH Act 2007 AMHPs may only be approved by one Local Social Services Authority (LSSA) but may be authorised by other LSSAs based on that original approval.

AMHP Competencies

AMHPs are required to demonstrate and evidence their competencies and to meet the requirements within the Social Work England Approved mental health professions (AMHP) guidance.

This tool is designed to enable social worker AMHPs to map their CPD targets within Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF) approach to the standards of proficiency they need to meet for registration with Social Work England.

AMHP Approval

To maintain approval there is a statutory requirement ‘in each year that the AMHP is approved, the AMHP shall complete at least 18 hours of training agreed with the approving LSSA as being relevant to their role as an AMHP as stated in 'The Mental Health (AMHP) (England) Regulations 2008 5(a)’.

The year is defined as the start date of approval by Walsall Council.
