The standards of proficiency (SOPs) set out what a social worker in England and occupational therapist should know understand and be able to do when they complete their social work/occupational therapy training so that they can register with the HCPC. Further information is available here.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Professionals must undertake CPD to stay registered with HCPC and must meet the HCPC standards including the CPD standards

HCPC define CPD as ‘a range of learning activities through which health and care professionals maintain and develop throughout their career to ensure that they retain their capacity to practice safely, effectively and legally within their evolving scope of practice’.

CPD should demonstrate a blended learning approach rather than the ‘traditional training’ approach.  Blended learning combines different learning methods, media, resources and styles, both formal and informal, to maximise the learning experience.

              CPD Examples                                      CPD Evidence

It is recommended that professionals keep an up to date record of all CPD activity to record the on-going development.

HCPC have put together example profiles in partnership with professional bodies, to give examples of how registrants in different settings, doing different kinds of activities, could show how they meet our standards for CPD if they were selected for audit, click here for sample profiles.

For further information about what happens if you are selected for audit visit the HCPC website.

HCPC Standards of conduct, performance and ethics

These standards were adopted and published by HCPC on Tuesday 26 January 2016, further information is available on the HCPC website.

Please continue to view the HCPC website for up to date information.
