Dementia Webinar- Community Care

(* Community care Jan 2016 )A recent investigation by Community Care found care home staff are missing out on vital training in dementia care.

Their analysis of 300 inspection reports from the Care Quality Commission found more than a quarter of homes rated ‘inadequate’ (125) and ‘requires improvement’ (125) had gaps in dementia training. Even specialist dementia care homes were failing to provide training on the condition to their staff.

This is concerning given the Alzheimer’s Society estimates more than 80% of people in care homes are living with dementia or severe memory problems.

Community Care’s free webinar provided an overview of the key practice elements needed for high quality dementia care.

Our panel covered a range of issues including what research tells us about the needs of those with dementia, how staff can communicate with individuals more effectively and what lessons can be learned from those care homes already offering excellent care.

Speakers: Alison Murray, dementia lead at the Care Quality Commission, Kathryn Smith, Director of Operations at Alzheimer’s Society; Emma Clifford, former care worker, student nurse and Unison member.
